In the literature and art of the Fin de Siècle—a period of paradoxical sensibilities between decadence and a nervous sense of new beginnings—the lily stands for otherworldly beauty, fragile androgyny, and subtle transgression. Certain flowers and floral representations became important signifiers of queer identity and coded affinity during this period.
The lamp recalls an upside-down hanging bouquet of flowers and illuminates the blossoms from behind through its metallic shade. The pre-war longing for nature appears here as if preserved in eternal resin, even though it seems fragile and untouchable. In doing so, it produces a phenomenal play of light within the transparent resin, which resembles glass. The flowers appear anthropomorphic and gain a certain allure through the metallic sphere.
