Boop is inspired by the morphology of the sea urchin, its rounded mass and softly responsive tube feet, organisms that navigate the ocean, relying on their subtle strength to feed and move, are translated into a form that remains still, yet suggests latent vitality. The name Boop evokes the subtle sensation of contact with these tube feet: a light touch followed by a delicate release, reminiscent of tiny suction cups briefly attaching to the skin.
Produced through robotic-arm 3D printing, the lamp’s surface develops a layered, undulating texture. These subtle ridges echo the slow extension and contraction of marine appendages in water, capturing a suspended moment of movement within a solid structure. Light emerges from within the translucent body, scattering into the surrounding space like sunlight filtering through the ocean.
In its interactive mode, Boop responds to ambient sound-voices and music. The light shifts and pulses with a slow breathing rhythm, recalling the slow, rhythmic pulse of the ocean’s interior.Through this responsive behavior, the object appears momentarily animated by the presence of those around it, transforming illumination into a subtle exchange between environment, viewer, and object.
