For centuries, the ceramics of Seminara, Calabria, have given form to local beliefs, fears and desires. Among its most distinctive traditions are the apotropaic masks, grotesque faces with horns, exaggerated features and open mouths, traditionally placed on homes to ward off evil. Their very appearance was meant to frighten away whatever might threaten the household.

For its first seasonal drop, Alcova Design Shop presents six masks, bringing together ancestral forms and contemporary interpretations, including TA RA TA TA by Giovanni De Francesco. Small domestic guardians, each with its own character, history and magic.

Alcova Design Shop invites you to discover the extraordinary tradition of the Maschere Apotropaiche di Seminara. For our first drop of the season we are pleased to present six masks, each a powerful magical protective talisman.

Some masks are characterized by the ancestral features that have marked these ceramic faces for centuries; others are contemporary reinterpretations by Giovanni De Francesco, author of the TA RA TA TA mask.

These are handcrafted Calabrian apotropaic masks that Alcova Design Shop presents for their magical value and their aesthetic power.

The classic green and blue glazes accentuate the chiaroscuro of the sculpted surface, making the ceramic even more vibrant.

The mask brings together folk tradition, sculptural experimentation and the enduring desire to protect the spaces we call home.
